COLOR BLINDNESS
COLOR BLINDNESS
Color blindness affects 1 in 12 males (8%), and 1 in 200 females (0.5%), which means there are over 300 million colorblind people in the world. Feather's Gift has attempted to create what we believe to be the first ever books that are inclusive to colorblind children. We feel that anything that can encourage a child to read is a very good thing, and that includes colorful illustrations!
Our illustrations were created with the red-green colorblind spectrum in mind, with the assistance of both DaltonLens.org simulations and colorblind children during the process. While the illustrations are colorful to children with normal color vision, we tried to keep green and red to a minimum. These colors would appear brown to colorblind children. Both Feather and the Lonesome Firefly and Feather and the Unicorns are colorblind inclusive.
These books won't provide new colors to red-green colorblind children, but they do utilize their entire spectrum. Contrast and textures are important to colorblind children also, and are part of the reason we hid animals and feathers in the illustrations.
